Taking the Bible seriously but not literally

As the rest of the nation must know, New England has had almost constant rain for about a month now. Day after day of cloudy, rainy skies is beginning to wear me down.
Now I commute into Boston, MA, by taking a subway train from Revere, MA. During the trip, I have made it a daily practice to read Scripture on the train, using the suggested readings from the American Bible Society. Yesterday and today, the suggested readings are from the book of Genesis, chapters 6 to 9; the story of Noah and the Flood! Coincidence or...?
